The recent informational event brought together students, teachers and staff.

Jacquelyn Rosado ’22 MS has the ambition to become a certified financial planner. She hopes she will now receive a boost from the university community that will enable her to do so.

Rosado, who has a background in behavioral analysis, is a candidate for the university’s finance graduate program. She will soon be preparing to take the Securities Industry Essentials SIE exam, a foundation for entry into the financial services industry. Thanks to the support of a Pompea College of Business sponsor and benefactor, she takes the prep course and exam for free.

“I’m planning to make a career switch,” she said. “I’m looking forward to taking this course, mainly because it gives me a better idea of what to expect in the job market.”

Debra Abbott-Walker spoke to students about the SIE exam and financial services. ‘My passion is supporting women in the financial world’

Debra Abbott-Walker, a financial advisor to Equitable Advisors, has worked in the financial services industry for over 30 years. Passionate about increasing diversity in finance — especially when it comes to the number of women in the field — she graciously offered to sponsor 20 students who want to take the SIE exam so they could take a prep course and exam for free.

“My passion is supporting women in finance,” said Abbott-Walker, a member of the University’s Women’s Leadership Council. “There are too few women in the industry.”

Abbott-Walker recently spoke with students as part of an informational event presented by the University’s Women in Business Club. She discussed her own career and the importance of the exam and explained what the exam and course entailed.

“If you take advantage of this program while you are in school, you will become so much more marketable,” she told the students. “I encourage all of you to find something that you are passionate about, something that gives you energy and that you believe in.”

Leah Hartman, JD, MBA, a leading finance teacher who virtually attended the event, offered to refund the $60 exam fee for students who signed up for the course. David Sacco, MBA, a finance practitioner, then offered to sponsor 10 more students to take the class.

“This will help you stand out in the field,” he said. “You need this when you start your career. This lesson is a step forward and I encourage you to take advantage of everything you can.”

Students eagerly signed up for the SIE preparation course. ‘This is a great opportunity for us’

The exam preparation program is self-paced and usually takes about eight weeks. Students who register will take the course during the 2022 spring semester and those who pass the exam will have it on their university transcript. The course can be taken online and the scores are valid for four years.

Candice Deal, Ph.D., assistant dean of the university’s Pompea College of Business, says there is significant overlap between finance and other areas, such as accounting. She encouraged students in related disciplines to all consider taking the exam.

“This is the first time we’ve had this opportunity in college,” she said. “You are the first cohort while you are working on your bachelor’s or master’s degree. It is a great opportunity for you now that will benefit you later.”

After the event with Abbott-Walker, students such as Rosado and Dharti Patel ’22 MS, a candidate in the university’s graduate program in finance, eagerly signed up to take the course. Patel looks forward to the opportunity to advance her knowledge of finance, and she hopes it will give her an advantage as an applicant.

“This is a great opportunity for us,” said Patel, a native of India. “Finding a job in finance can be challenging for international students, and this will help us become more competitive.”
